"Keep my commands and you will live, guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart."
In old English, the pupil of the eye was called the 'apple'. It was thought that the pupil was round like imitating the shape of an apple. It was believed that when you looked at someone, their reflection appeared in your pupil. So if someone was or is the 'apple of your eye' he or she is someone that you look at a lot and find delight in seeing.~ Proverbs 7:2-3
In the same way God asks us to enjoy reading His word seeing it reflecting in our eyes and writing the words on the deepest parts of our hearts. In that people can see and know who God is, in and through us. Meditate on His words like you're spending time with the one you love. The one you see as the 'apple of your eye'.David was known as 'the apple of God's eye'. He found favor in God's eyes because David, in turn loved the Lord. He sought after God, learned from Him, spent time with Him. David I think saw God as the apple of his eye as well. I pray we all see the importance of seeing God the way David did.
David was far from perfect, he made some serious mistakes and blunders. Some would think they were unforgivable. But we serve a God that forgives showing grace and mercy. David remained 'the apple of God's eye' and we too, like David are the 'apple of God's eye'. Delight in Him as He delights in us. Seek Him like you seek the one you love most.
